Federal Tax Extension Information
Form 4868: Individual Extension - Filing Form 4868 gives you an automatic 6-month extension to file your tax return (until October 15). However, it's important to understand that this is only an extension to file your paperwork, not an extension to pay taxes owed.
Business Tax Extensions - Different business entities use different forms for extensions: Sole Proprietors use Form 4868, Partnerships and S Corporations use Form 7004 for a 6-month extension.
Like individual extensions, business extensions only extend the filing deadline, not the payment deadline. Estimated tax payments should still be made by the original due date.
